Whitehaven School Cumbria, UK
Whitehaven is a town at the western coast of
England. A group of students and their teacher decided to contribute
something to the landmine problem's solution in Africa. Ideas were
descussed, plans were made. But when the time of the intended "donation
run" came close plans had to be switched. The reason: the british
weather again coped its lousy reputation. No reason for the kids
to twiddle their thumbs. A quick decision was made and the group
went to the local supermarket and packed for shoppers. They explained
to the people the humanitarian aim of this action and as a result
they were able to collect a nice sum of money. The donated money
helped to clear a considerable number of squaremeters of a way to
school in Angola, Africa.
In the name of the Angolan kids we thank the Whitehaven students
for their contribution. We learned a lesson: If big plans don't
work don't give up! Switch over to something more manageable.
By the way: the MgM deminers have to take the same decisions everytime
the African rainy season comes along.
