MINESEYE MK II

NEUTRON INTERROGATION

Traditional Technologies

  • TNA - thermal neutron activation
    • sensitivity only to nitrogen concentration in explosives
    • poor background discrimination
    • slow in acquiring spectra
  • FNA - fast neutron activation
    • sensitive to all elements in a plastic explosive
    • identification of chemical compound possible
    • background discrimination difficult
    • slow in acquiring spectra
  • PFNA - pulsed fast neutron analysis
    • very short pulse neutron TOF to give spatial information
    • identification of chemical compound possible
    • excellent background discrimination
    • slow in acquiring spectra

New Technology

  • TINA - tomographic interrogation by neutron activation
    • similar to PFNA except
    • single high flux neutron pulse activation
    • no spectra building process
    • identification of predefined materials

TINA

Numerical studies

Detailed MCNP neutron interrogation study

  • simulation of different ground environments
  • simulation of different explosives
  • evaluation of minimum neutron dose possible
  • optimization of detector and source geometry
  • evaluation of shielding requirement
  • evaluation of neutron source design
