Angola’s future: The next generation
The organization "People Against Mines" (MgM) operates in Angola in different provinces, amongst them Kunene. Refugees who had to leave their homes and live in camps due to the bloody civil war are now returning to their home towns on mine free roads cleared by MgM.

Ondjiva was a similarly devastated and abandoned town. Today it’s populated is again roughly 30,000 people, many of whom still libing in very poor circumstances. But even now that the civil war in this region of Angola is over, the return to "normal" circumstances is not necessarily guaranteed. But with small steps the road towards peace is slowly being traversed...

During the planning and execution of de-mining programs there is always a need for tight cooperation with the local authorities. This is how you get to know - and value- each other. With the help of Governor Pedro Mutinde, MgM is now planning the extension of our workshops where war equipment can be converted to MgM mine clearance equipment. This type of cost saving vehicle conversion has been practiced by MgM for years with great results in Namibia. At the request of the Governor we greatly extended the central MgM storage facility with its workshops in the South of Angola so that we can train our own speciality technical staff there in the future. Our main goal is to train the young Kuanjamas well enough that our speciality machines and mine-safe vehicles can be produced there with the left over junk of the civil war. At the moment, workshops for metal, carpentry, electronics and the space for future training are under construction.
