A
GOOD EDUCATION AS A LIFE INSURANCE Building up national capacities in order to help the country help itself is generally a rewarding aim in all humanitarian activities. MgM is taking this job very seriously. After years of endeavor MgM has now succeeded to let the first MgM training centre for deminers become a reality. Here the first 50 MgM trainees learn how to work with a metal detector and a prodder. The MgM Safety Rules, following internationally agreed safety standards, play an important part in the training. Another chapter is comprehensive knowledge of all types of mines and detonators known in Angola, the expert defusing and controlled explosion of mines and dangerous ammunition leftovers. Dealing with radio facilities and GPS devices is trained, too. Proper marking of findings, rules for the safe transport and storage of explosives and, and, and... Humanitarian demining is a complex theme, therefore the training is meticulous. For a deminer it is even more true that a good education safeguards the future. Festive Inauguration The importance of the project for the region and for all Angola was stressed in the speaches made by the representatives of the regional government at the official inauguration. The ladies and gentlemen were very impressed when they were shown around the training centre and thanked the MgM management and the German donors for their commitment. The Angolan television made detailed reports. A very positive signal for a country which is on its way from decades of civil war back into the peaceful community of nations. Donations from Germany The unselfish commitment and enormous readiness to help of private German donators, companies and organisations was if outstanding importance for the materialization of the training centre. The donations, the entire furniture of the training centre, machines, materials and tools have been collected, repaired and shipped to Africa over years. Several large oversea containers reached Namibia by ship and were then transported over gravel roads to Ondjiva. After the buildings were finished the containers could finally be unpacked. Our heart-felt thanks to all those who help to materialize this exemplary aid project. |
